People Meters are TV's latest ratings rage; may brush aside television 'sweeps'

Audience numbers, gathered by a new tabulation method or Local People Meters, can tell stations whether more men or fewer mature women watched their late news the night before. Local People Meters, or LPMs, have been in the Cleveland market for more than a year, and news managers say they are still adjusting. In the future, LPMs may make "sweeps" -- times when local news departments trot out their most attention-grabbing segments -- go the way of Betamax and 8-track tapes. Full story »
